The ultimate aim is to give your child a really good understanding of the language of music as a whole, not just learn an instrument or how to read music as an isolated skill without understanding the bigger picture.

Luckily, the piano is the best instrument to do this with, as you have a visual representation of all of the notes laid out in front of you in a logical pattern. If your child wanted to play any other instrument, as long as they learn in this way, using the piano as a tool to learn music as a bigger concept, they'll find it easy later on to transfer this knowledge on to ANY instrument.
